More About Juniper Green Air Rifle Club

Juniper Green Air Rifle Club (JGARC) is one of the oldest air rifle club’s in Scotland. The village hall has over a century of shooting history in this part of Edinburgh. The village hall was originally located in Corstorphine area. However it was bought / gifted to Juniper Green Village.  Originally used as a drill hall for the T.A. with a 20yd .303 range attached to the side, the old caretakers house at the side of the hall was originally the C/O’s (commanding officer) house. The T.A. / homegaurd moved out in the late 50′s and ‘Juniper Green Rifle Club’ was born.

Rim-fire and centre-fire rifles eventually gave way to air rifles, and JGARC was conceived in 1980 as a constituted club.

The JGARC indoor range is located in Juniper Green’s village hall, in the south west of Edinburgh under the Pentland Hills but the club also enjoys a large 20 acre outdoor range nearby in the neighbouring village of Currie (about 1 1/4 miles west of the Juniper Green). This boasts a fully covered firing point on a 45yd main range, to which all JGARC members have access all year round if they so wish (Keys can be provided on full membership). The club will move its 4 weekly evening shoots to the outdoor range for the duration of the summer months.

The club opens 4 days a week and provides 5 shooting sessions, probationers, members and pre-arranged prospective members & guests are all welcome to drop in on any of the following sessions:

Monday  -  19:00-21:15 hrs.

Tuesday  -  19:00-21:15 hrs.

Wednesday  -  19:00-21:15 hrs

Friday  -  12:00-14:00 hrs & 19:00-21:15 hrs

(Junior members meet on a Tuesday and the Senior members meet on a Friday afternoon. All are welcome but the priority on the firing point is given to Juniors and Seniors at these sessions).

Membership of the club is constantly growing and range’s, from juniors to seniors, guys and girls from all walks of life and all skill ranges, physical abilities, and shooting experience. Everybody is welcome as a new member or old. The club has many very experienced shooters who are more than happy to pass on their knowledge to any members. The atmosphere is informal; of course going without saying safety is always the primary consideration for all shooting activities.

Membership is by committee approval. If you are interested in joining, please contact a committee member to arrange your first visit and see how you enjoy it!. Your first visit is FREE!

Benefits of membership to JGARC -

Every member is a member of SACS (Scottish Association for Country Sports) which provides Third party liability Insurance of £10 million, while engaged in any recognised form of country sports within UK territorial limits. UK members are also covered anywhere in the world whilst on holiday.

JGARC is also affiliated to UKAHFT (United Kingdom Association of Hunter Field Target).

  1. Hello, I was just wondering how old you have to be to join, as in would I have to be over 18 to take classes or can I join at any age? Thank you :)

  2. Hi Fiona,

Thanks for the interest in our Club, you do not have to be over 18 to join as a Jnr Member however if you are under the are of 18 then if you choose to come to the club you will need to be under the supervision of a parent or guardian while you are shooting with us. Membership is subject to committee approval and we look at how well a person deals with weapon handling and safety on the range. Membership is at the Discretion of the JGARC committee.

  3. Hello again, do you have to have experience or is there a chance to learn at the club? Thanks again.

  4. Hi Fiona,

You do not need to have experience of using an air rifle or pistol as we will show you the ropes on your first visit, if you have not used air guns before we will show you safe weapons handling and range safety procedures. The person who go’s over your induction will keep you right.

  7. Hi, I’m interested in joining a club. Do I need my own rifle or pistol? Cheers Darren

  8. Hi Darren,

You do not need one at the first stages of coming down and giving it a go, however if you like it its better you have your own one to use. All the full members have there own rifles or pistols. But you are fine to use the club guns till you get going.

  10. Hi i’m thinking of visiting your club one night to see if me and my 2 son’s 13 and 15yrs old would enjoy, and think of joining.
Is there a night we can come and try out also would we be able to all shoot on the same night ? and how much is membership thanks

  11. Hi Gary,

You are free to use the club guns on your first night to get you going and see how you like it. Any potential Jnr members need to be under supervision of parent or guardian while shooting at the club. Induction to the club takes about an hour, so you can shoot on the first night you come down once we have went over the Induction process with you and your son’s. The joining fee is £40.00 after you are approved for membership and £50.00 for your first year pro-rata both payable if membership is approved. You will then pay £2.00 per vist per person to the range. First visit and Induction are free.

  12. If you wish to arrange a time to come down you can call us on: 07771 965675.

We can then set a date for you and your son’s first visit.

    Hope to see you soon!

  13. Gary,

There would be also no issues with you shooting on the same night as your son’s just that a Tuesday is Jnr’s night and priority on the firing point is given to Juniors on this night, you may not be able to shoot with them on this night only, depending on how busy the range is for the Tuesday shoot.

  14. Hi,

Just like to say a big thanks to Jim whom I met on Friday last. I enjoyed my first visit and will definitely be back. After having a shot of Jims BSA R10 mk2 I’ve been scouring the internet looking at pcp’s.
I can see this becoming an expensive hobby :-)

    Thanks again
    Kev.

  15. Hi Kev,

Glad you had a good time at the club, I have passed your comments onto Jim.

  16. Dear sir
I am in the process of purchasing a Daystate Air Wolf MCT on a FAC. I came across your club while looking for sources of air suppliers. Do you allow the use of the FAC air rifles at your club?

    Best regards
    Graeme Blundell

  17. Hi Graeme,

Thank’s for your interest in our club. We do not allow the use of the FAC air rifle’s at our club this is due to us being an Air rifle and pistol club only and we do not have the facilities nor do we hold a licence as a club to shoot section 1 (FAC) firearms. If you wish to shoot with us your rifle will have to be under or on the 12 ft lb limit.
If you wish, You can call us on the club phone (Number on the website) and make arrangements to come down and see what we are all about, if you have a rifle that is not on FAC we would be happy to have you come down if not you can have a go with one of the club guns.
Give us a call if you want to come along and we can arrange a date and time that is good for us and yourself.

  18. Hi Nick,

The AGM this year looks to be in the Indoor Range, We will post up on Facebook and the website the location and the date once this has been confirmed… the date is TBA. Please keep an eye on the website for updates on this and we will also advise this on the noticeboard at the indoor range.

    Thanks,

    Admin.

  19. Hi Mike,

The JGARC AGM will take place on the 3rd of Apr 2013 at the main hall just outside the Indoor Range at 19.30hrs… Please try to be there for 19.00 as we want to get underway at 19.30 sharp. With regards to the Facebook page, log-in to Facebook under your own user name and P/Word go to the top search bar and type “Junipergreen Air Rifle Club” It will be the top hit you will get and you will see our logo on the page, once you have done that select it as a “Like” and you will then get status updates via Facebook from us. There is not really too much more info on the Facebook page as there is on the JGARC website myself and the other Admins update with the same info so Facebook will have the same updates as the JGARC website for important events such as the AGM, the details I have provided are all the details you should need if there is anything more specific then feel free to mail us at: JGARC@hotmail.co.uk and we can deal with them directly.

    Thanks, Admin.
